Bouna Coundoul acuses RBNY of racism
December 19, 2011

Recently released goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul has lashed out at the RBNY brass in an interview on SeneWeb.com, and he did not pull any punches. In fact, he accused the club of "a dose of racism" due to its treatment of African players.

"Last year, there were five Africans," said Coundoul, counting "Medhi Ballouchy (Morocco), Ibrahim Salou (Ghana), Tony Tchani (Cameroon), Danleigh Borman (South Africa), Macoumba Kandji (Senegal), [as well as] myself. "All of these others have been released, except for Medhi and myself."

Clearly, Coundoul is discounting the fact that three of those Africans (Ballouchy, Salou, and Tchani) were brought in by the current regime, so how racist could they have been in the first place? Of course, Borman and Kandji, as well as Coundoul, were holdovers from the Juan Carlos Osorio / Jeff Agoos era. However, every player not named Dane Richards from that era has now been dropped, and that includes Africans, Americans, and Europeans.

Coundoul went on, detailing his supposed mistreatment. "From the beginning of last season, [Hans Backe and Erik Soler] tried to warn and intimidate me. They asked me not to play friendly matches and respond to invitations from the national team for official games. They told me that to punish me, they put me on the bench. In the third game of the season, I became the starter again. My performance helped calm the situation, but the problem occurred again when I was summoned by the national team for the playoffs against Cameroon."

"I decided to play for my nation at the expense of my career. I have no regrets at all."

Whatever the situation might have been last year, the one regrettable thing is Bouna's accusations...
